Year 6S

Welcome

Welcome to Year 6, and your final year with us here at Shavington Primary! We are so excited to get started on the year, and make it your best one yet.

Your Teacher in 6S is Mrs Sweeney

Your Teaching Assistants in 6S are Mrs McGregor, Mrs Chapman and Mr Jones.

AutumnTerm

In the Autumn term, our first focus is "Is it ever right to fight?". We will be looking at World War 2 during this topic, and looking at the moments that shaped the war and impacted modern Britain.

English

For our writing text, we will be exploring the text "Star of Fear, Star of Hope- By Jo Hoestlandt"

In guided reading, our focus text is 'When We Were Heroes by Emma Carroll'. We will also be exploring a variety of shorted texts using the Reading Vipers principle, to aid with preparation for our assessments looking at the varying question types and techniques to answer these.

Maths

We will be beginning the year with our place value topic, and we will be looking at numbers up to 1,000,000. We will then be looking at the four operations, mental calculations and fractions. We will be regularly practising arithmetic questions, so take the time to brush up on your times tables to help you as much as possible. You will continue to have access to TTRockstars as well as Freckle.

Science

For this half term, we will be focusing on 'Light'. We will be revisiting prior learning from Year 3 and will be looking at spectrums and wavelengths.

We have lots of other fun learning planned through other subjects and will share these with you as we complete them through Showbie. Your classcode will be sent out by your class teacher.

In this class, we use all of our learning muscles in different ways. We work together as ants, showing one another a new strategy for learning or supporting each other. We are resilient rhinos - never giving up and making sure that we have put the most effort we can into an activity. We are resourceful beavers - using resources in and around the classroom to scaffold our learning and support us in lessons. We are reflective tortoises - we look back on achievements and accomplishments.

Water Bottles

All children have been given a school water bottle. This needs to be brought to school each day having been washed and re filled with fresh water from home. Children will be reminded at the end of the day to bring home their lunch bag and water bottle to be washed ready for the next day. We have turned off our water filter system so children will not be able to fill up their water bottle in the usual way. All classes have access to drinking water throughout the day should the children require extra water.

PE

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On these days, we ask that your child comes to school in their PE clothes rather than their school uniform.

Weather dependant they can wear their shorts and school coloured PE T- shirt and school jumper. If the weather is cold, then track suit bottoms/leggings would be more suitable. Trainers are preferable to pumps as it is possible the children may be outdoors for some lessons.

Outdoor Shoes and Coats

Please ensure your child brings a coat to school each day. We had a rainy start to the term but we are trying as much as possible to allow the children their outdoor breaks which may mean us putting coats on to go out in the rain as much as possible without getting too wet. Please ensure all coats are clearly named.

Please also ensure your child has a pair of outdoor shoes as our play area is on the school field. We will be using the field as much as possible.
