Our teaching assistant is Mrs Kerr. We will also be supported by Mrs Wright

Welcome back to school!! I can't wait to hear all of the things you have been doing over the half term break.

Thank you for all your hard work over the first half term, keep it going!

It's going to be a very busy and exciting first term in Year 1. We hope you are all very excited about all the things we have coming up before we get to Christmas.

Autumn Term

This term we are going to be starting our work with our fantastic book 'Nibbles' by Emma Yarlett

Nibbles the Book Monster By Emma Yarlett

Maths

In maths, we will continue to use power maths alongside some Mastering Number lessons that are great fun and will make us all magic mathematicians! We explore a range of concrete, hands on tools such as ten frames, rekenreks, base ten, counters and part whole models. You may hear your child refer to these over the year!

Phonics and reading

Phonics continues to be a vital part of your child's education as they come into Year One. We make sure that as the children come into their new year we take the time to refresh their sounds from reception and help build their confidence after the summer before we move onto new sounds. We will continue with the Floppy Phonics scheme in our teaching and the phonics books that we will be sending home. To promote their knowledge and confidence in their reading and securing their sounds we ask that these books are read at least twice so that they can become more fluent readers. We will also be sending home reading for pleasure books for you to enjoy with your child.

In Year One children will do their phonics screening in the Summer term, We will be giving you lots of information about this once we are all back in school and settled into our new class.

PHONICS SCREENING WEEK - week beginning 9th June 2024 (All children need to be in school during this week)

In the meantime, you can have a peak at the Phonics video that we made during COVID when it was more difficult for parents to be able to join us in the school.

The staff from Nursery, Reception and Year One have come together to make a video for you. Please don’t expect any wonderful acting or photography but we are hoping that this makes your child’s phonic journey a little bit clearer to you. Please find the link below so that you can watch it at your leisure.

Reminders

PE - Our PE days this half term are Monday and Friday. Please send your child to school in their PE kit on these days.

Coats  please can you send your child in with a coat everyday as we will be doing learning in and out of the classroom in both rain and shine!!!  It would be a real help if these were clearly named so they don't get lost.

Water bottles - Your child has been given a brand new school water bottle on their first day. Please ensure that your child's bottle is in school every day so that they can access a drink during the day.

Bookbags -  Please bring in books/book bags every day and these are kept in your child's drawer.
