Pupil Premium 

Pupil Premium (PP) funding is received from central government according to the number of pupils on roll who have been eligible for Free School Meals at any time within the last six years (known as Free School Meals Ever – FSME), or who have been ‘looked after’ continuously for more than six months, or who are children of service personnel.

Free School Meals and Pupil Premium.  What it means for you and your child.

Free School Meals
All children in EYFS and KS1 receive a Universal Free School Meal. Children may also be entitled to Income Related Free-School meals depending on their parents’ financial circumstances. Children who are eligible for Income Related Free School Meals are also eligible for other additional support, including financial support with the cost of school trips.

If you are in receipt of any of the following benefits, your child may be entitled to Income Related Free School Meals.

• Income Support
• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
• Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
• Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
• Universal Credit, provided you have an annual net earned income not exceeding £7,400 (£616.67 per month)

Your child might also be eligible if you’re in a household with no recourse to public funds (NRPF), subject to a maximum income threshold. This is for children of:

•             Zambrano and Chen carers (non-EEA nationals caring for a British citizen residing in the UK)

•             British National (Overseas) passport holders

•             Spousal visa, work visa, or student visa holders

•             Those with no immigration status

•             Families with a right to remain in the UK under Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights

•             Families receiving support under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989 who are subject to a no recourse to public funds restriction

•             Certain failed asylum seekers supported under Section 4 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Pupil Premium
Children who are registered for Free School Meals on the January Census Day, also become entitled to Pupil Premium Funding. This fund is aimed at improving life chances for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and is paid directly to schools. It is up to each school to decide how best to spend the money to create the most positive outcomes for the children in their care. Once a child becomes eligible for Pupil Premium Funding, their school will continue to receive this money for the next six years, even if their financial circumstances change.

The Learning Partnership 
Within The Learning Partnership, Pupil Premium Funding is used to support children based on an identification of need. This may include financial support with activities such as school trips; academic support through bespoke intervention; and nurture based support. The projects that are funded each year and within each school across the trust will vary depending on the needs of the children at the time, however we aim to create a fair and equal system for all children.

Voice of the Child
We have a system in place within school that enables all children who are eligible for Free School Meals, or Pupil Premium Funding to have an individual mentor. Mrs Pauline Elson and Miss Lisa Hulse are both Pupil premium mentors and have built strong positive relationships with their children through this process and other work they do within our school. The children meet with their mentor, one to one, once a half term to talk about how they are doing and to identify any areas where they feel they need some extra support. This could be anything from help with friendship issues, to a subject they are struggling with in class, to having no PE kit. These meetings give us a great insight into the best ways of using the money we receive through Pupil Premium. Their individual mentors also become a trusted adult in school who the child can speak to if ever they have a problem.


What we offer:

Based on an identification of need, children may receive any or all of the following support:

Financial Support 

• Up to 100% funding for school trips and residential visits for children who are eligible for Free School Meals at the time of the trip 
• Up to 50% funding for school trips and residential visits for children who are eligible for Pupil Premium Funding 

Requests for support with funding must be made in person, via telephone or via e-mail to the School Business Manager for every trip.

Academic Support

• Working one to one, in a small group, or with extra help in the classroom on specific objectives, based on assessments of the child’s attainment and progress.

Social and Emotional Support

• Receiving support either one to one or in a small group with specific social or emotional issues, identified by the child’s teacher, parent, or the child themselves.

Sports Funding 

The government provides additional funding to schools to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – has been allocated to primary school head teachers.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Purpose of funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but schools have been given the freedom to choose how they do this. A list of possible uses has been suggested.

Shavington Primary school chooses to use this funding to buy in sports coaching for all our children to access and to provide swimming opportunities to children in key stage 2. The sports coaches deliver high quality lessons and provide both lunchtime and after school clubs for our children to participate in. The swimming lessons are targetted at year 3 initially then children in years 4,5 & 6 for catch up programs.

Our aim is to:

• increase pupils’ participation in the sports and physical activities

• provide a wider range of after school activities/clubs for pupils

• Offer all children in year 3 access to 6 weeks worth of swimming lessons, taught buy swimming teachers.

• Enable all children in years 4,5 & 6 the opportunity to take part in a catch up swimming project to enable all children to be able to swim 25m. This is in line with the government guidelines for primary aged pupils to be able to swim at least 25m by the time they leave Primary school. 
  
  Planned Spending

• Teaching staff have received high quality CPD from the sports coach provided by Premier Sports. This has had a direct impact on the quality of teaching and learning in PE.

• Children have had a wider provision of sports coaching which has led to a greater number of children accessing after school clubs especially in gymnastics.

• All children across the school have had the experience of specific coaching in a variety of sports and skills.
