English
Competence in English is essential for a child to succeed in school. We aim to provide
children with skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, to enable them
to achieve their potential in all areas of the curriculum. We are keen to develop
an appreciation of language through speaking, listening, reading, writing and drama.
These skills are extended through a range of activities in English and other subjects
in the curriculum. The children will read a range of fiction, poetry and non fiction.
Handwriting is taught formally, providing children with the ability to present work
to a high standard.
Maths
Numeracy lessons are based on a mixture of practical experiences and formal written
work, in accordance with the National Numeracy Strategy. This mixture allows children
to get a firm grasp of the underlying structures of mathematics, as well as developing
their strategies for approaching mathematics. In Years 5 and 6 children are grouped
by ability as we seek to develop the potential of each child. By linking our studies
to everyday situations, wherever possible, the children are increasing their understanding
of the subject, skills to solve problems and knowledge in all areas of mathematics.
Science
Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. We aim to give them
the skills and knowledge they will need to explore and make sense of this world.
Our detailed scheme of work provides for the progressive development of skills and
knowledge throughout the school. It also ensures that the whole of the Science element
of the National Curriculum is effectively covered. Children are given every opportunity
to experience for themselves the excitement of scientific discovery. They do this
through practical activities. This practical approach to the teaching of Science
provides the children with a firm foundation of scientific concepts on which they
can build in the future.
Information and Communication Technology
We believe that ICT skills should be taught as a separate subject. We also believe
ICT should be taught, developed and reinforced through other subject areas. This
combined approach allows children the opportunity to practice and refine skills
throughout their years at Shavington building on the most important quality of ICT
– confidence. We aim to show ICT’s relevance to our children’s every day lives through
planned access to all areas of ICT, including a range of software, the internet,
e-mail and digital cameras. We take the safety of children using the Internet seriously
and all computers are monitored in order that only “safe” sites are accessed
Religious Education
Religious Education is based on the Cheshire Religious Education Agreed Syllabus.
The emphasis is placed on Christianity but other religions, their beliefs and practices,
are also studied. Children are encouraged to explore personal ideas and values,
and to reflect on their own attitudes and emotions. An act of worship takes place
each day. If, for any reason, parents wish to withdraw their child from an R. E.
lesson or an act of worship, they should contact the Headteacher and alternative
arrangements will be made.
