Week beginning Monday 6th February 2017

Date: 11th Feb 2017 @ 5:11pm

Over the past two weeks Year One have been looking at place value and number in Maths.  The children have been using multilink and dienes to make numbers by looking very carefully at a number to see how many tens and ones a number has.  The children found this very difficult at first but we have slowly become experts.  We have been using a number square to 100 to help us to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.  We are pretty good at counting in 10s now but we need a little more practice at counting in 2s and 5s.  We have also been finding one more and one less than a number and we used the number squares to 100 to help us to workout the answer.  Next week, we are going to be looking at adding and subtracting numbers but some of the questions will have a missing number and the children will learn how to find the missing number.

In English, we have been practising writing in sentences using capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and using 'and' to join phrases to make a longer sentence.  The children enjoyed writing about a story called Digiduck's big decision, a story we listened to for Safer Internet Day on Tuesday.

In Science, we have been learning about wild plants and garden plants and the difference between them.  The children have learnt the names of some wild plants and garden plants.  The children even designed their own garden using their knowledge of garden plants.  Next week we will be learning about trees and finding out what a deciduous tree and evergreen tree is.  Most of our runner bean seeds have started to grow now and some are getting really tall - nearly 25cm.  The children have really enjoyed coming in each morning to see if their plant has grown and they have been recording their observations very carefully in their bean diaries.
