Week beginning Monday 15th May 2017

Date: 19th May 2017 @ 9:37am

We have had a very busy couple of weeks getting stuck into our new topic 'Carnival of the Animals'.  The children have been learning about animals and their different characteristics and grouping them into either mammals, fish, birds, insects, reptiles or amphibians.

We have been listening to the music composed by Camille Saint Saens 'The Carrnival of the Animals' and we had to guess which animal we thought each section of the music was portraying.  In our PE lessons with Mrs Glover we have been listening to the music and moving along to the music.  Then, we came up with movements for each of the animals in the music.

In Art we have been using a variety of materials to produce animal print.  We used shaving foam and drawing ink to produce marbled animal print.  This was very messy but it produced some fantastic animal prints.  We will use the marbled animal print to create a front cover for our topic books.

In English, our writing is improving by the day and we are using capital letters, fingers spaces and full stops.  We have been focussing on the story 'Room on the Broom' and we have completed lots of activities.  We have created our very own monster to scare the dragon away.  We made sure we used lots of adjectives to describe the monster.  We have created our own nasty or nice potions like the witch in the story by working with a partner to think of the items we would put into a nice or nasty potion.  We have used a story string to help us to become more familar with the story so that we are able to retell the story in our own words.  To help with our sentence structure and to make sure that our sentences make sense we are saying our sentences aloud and counting how many words are in the sentence before we start writing.

In Maths, we have been looking at number facts up to 20 and beyond.  We have been using bar models to help us to understand that one number sentence can help us to think of another number sentence.  For example, 5 + 4 = 9 , 9 - 4 = 5, 9 - 5 = 4 and 4 + 5 = 9.
