5 Little Speckle Frogs

On Thursday 16th our class had their first look at subtraction in year 1. However, we didn't think that introducing them to number sentences straight away was the most thrill way to do this. The children need to be excited by Maths, even if they don't realise what they're doing is Maths. A more practical and engrossing angle was needed to bring in this excitement for what they are doing.

We used a few different activities to engage the children and, more importantly, have fun as well. We took fruit from one another and saying sentences such as, 'You have 5 pieces of fruit, but if I take you apple you will only have 4'. It became quickly apparently that the children didn't like to share their fruit, but they had using the vocabulary in a practical situation. Other children ran their own car parks where different cars came in and out. They had to try and keep track of how many cars were there at any one time. They were all very popular car parks and the children kept trying to trick each other, taking out different numbers of cars. Finally, we acted out the song '5 Little Speckled Frogs' (or in one case 7 Little Speckled Frogs) using a bench as our speckled log. We had so much fun doing this activity some of the children wanted to perform it to each other. You can probably tell by the videos we had a lot of fun filming these and I can assure you these weren't done in one take. Year 1 love to laugh when they're performing, which I think makes their performances that tiny bit more special.
