The Learning for Life Proud to be part of The Learning for Life

Year 5S

Welcome back to 5S!

Your Teacher is Miss Spencer and your Teaching Assistants are Miss Watts and Mrs Elson.

Our Spring Term  topic is 'Could you be an explorer?'.

Through this topic, we will be learning all about the history of the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. Learning all about their daily life, culture and beliefs. We will also learn about the different Norse myths and look at how Britain was influenced by Viking and Saxon settlers. Towards the end of our topic, we will learn about Edward the Confessor one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings and the importance of 1066. This term, we will also be looking at trade in Geography, exploring how trade has changed over time and the importance of fair trade.

We will be enjoying lots of different art, design and technology with this topic, including: designing and creating a Viking longboat, making a clay Viking face and many more exciting activities!

Our 'Pathways to Write' book focus for this half term is Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd-Stanton.

Our 'Pathways to Read' text for this half term is Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman.

Our Spring Term Power Maths units are focused on:  multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages.

Please keep practising your times tables at home to maintain our fluency in them.

We will be using Showbie as a way to share resources and communicate. You can use this area to upload any homework you have completed for this term.

Our class Showbie code is: 8G8NP

Our P.E. days will be on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon. Children are asked to come in their P.E. kits on those days.

In this class, we use all of our learning muscles in different ways. We work together as ants, showing one another a new strategy for learning or supporting each other. We are resilient rhinos - never giving up and making sure that we have put the most effort we can into an activity. We are resourceful beavers - using resources in and around the classroom to scaffold our learning and support us in lessons. We are reflective tortoises - we look back on achievements and accomplishments.

What went well? What did I learn? What do I need to improve on? How can I be even better than what I am already?

Growth mindset statements

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. On these days we ask that your child comes to school in their PE clothes rather than their school uniform.

Weather dependant they can wear their shorts and school coloured PE T- shirt and school jumper. If the weather is cold, then track suit bottoms/leggings would be more suitable. Trainers are preferable to pumps as it is possible the children may be outdoors for some lessons.

Water Bottles

All children have been given a school water bottle. This needs to be brought to school each day having been washed and re filled with fresh water from home. Children will be reminded at the end of the day to bring home their lunch bag and water bottle to be washed ready for the next day. We have turned off our water filter system so children will not be able to fill up their water bottle in the usual way. All classes have access to drinking water throughout the day should the children require extra water.

Outdoor shoes and coats

Please ensure your child brings a coat to school each day. We had a rainy start to the term but we are trying as much as possible to allow the children their outdoor breaks which may mean us putting coats on to go out in the rain as much as possible without getting too wet. Please ensure all coats are clearly named.

Please also ensure your child has a pair of outdoor shoes as our play area is on the school field. We will be using the field as much as possible.
